Appendix A · A Guide to the Sources

This book draws on established work across several fields and mentions its sources in the text rather than in footnotes. What follows is a reader's guide to that material, organized by domain, so that anyone who wants to check a claim or go deeper knows where to look. It is a map to the literature, not an exhaustive bibliography, and it flags — as the chapters do — which ideas are well established, which are contested, and which are illustrative only.

A note on the case examples. The book contains a number of short portraits — the woman who cannot start her Sunday work, the man who has quit smoking four times, the over-functioner everyone relies on, and others. These are illustrative composites, not case histories of real individuals; they are built to make a mechanism visible, and any resemblance to a particular person is the resemblance of a common pattern to its instances, which is the whole point. Where a portrait touches clinical territory, the guidance in Appendix C governs.

Systems, regulation, and the self as a dynamic process

The foundational claim — that a person is better understood as a regulatory system than as a bundle of fixed traits — draws on cybernetics (Norbert Wiener), general systems theory (Ludwig von Bertalanffy), and the study of self-organizing structures far from equilibrium (Ilya Prigogine). In psychology proper, the relational, "the-symptom-is-in-the-system" view is developed in family systems therapy (Murray Bowen, Salvador Minuchin), Internal Family Systems (Richard Schwartz), and control-theoretic models of behavior. None of these requires the planetary imagery; all of them treat the relationship between functions, rather than the function in isolation, as the unit of analysis.

Cognition, attention, and the predictive brain

On selective attention and the constructed nature of perception, the order-of-magnitude figures for sensory input versus conscious bandwidth trace to Manfred Zimmermann; treat them as illustrative ratios, not precise measurements. The account of the brain as a forward-modeling "prediction engine" comes from predictive processing and the Free Energy Principle (Karl Friston, Andy Clark, Jakob Hohwy, Anil Seth). On insight, the "aha moment" research is that of Mark Jung-Beeman and John Kounios. Cognitive defusion is drawn from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Steven Hayes and colleagues). Threat-versus-challenge appraisal comes from the stress and coping literature (Richard Lazarus, Susan Folkman, Jim Blascovich), and stress reappraisal specifically from Jeremy Jamieson and Alison Wood Brooks. Affect labeling — that naming a feeling dampens the physiological response — is Matthew Lieberman's. Perception as "controlled hallucination," and the demonstrations that it is constructed (the McGurk effect, change blindness), draw on Anil Seth and a broad perceptual literature; the reconstructive, editable nature of memory is Elizabeth Loftus's. The strong Sapir–Whorf hypothesis is largely rejected in contemporary linguistics; the weak version this book uses is supported.

Desire, reward, and affect

The dissociation of "wanting" from "liking" is Kent Berridge's incentive-salience work. Dopamine as a reward-prediction-error signal comes from Wolfram Schultz, Peter Dayan, and Read Montague; variable-ratio reinforcement is B. F. Skinner's. Mimetic desire is René Girard's. On savoring and the consolidation of positive experience, see Rick Hanson. Hedonic adaptation (the "treadmill") traces to Brickman and Campbell and later wellbeing research; adult attachment styles to John Bowlby, extended by Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver. The "ego depletion" model of willpower is not relied on here, because it has not survived large replication efforts; what survives is the weaker claim that sustained control is effortful and state-dependent.

Body, rhythm, and emotion

Circadian science (the suprachiasmatic nucleus, light entrainment, the glymphatic clearance of the sleeping brain) is well established. Ultradian cycles trace to Nathaniel Kleitman's Basic Rest-Activity Cycle. Interoception and the bodily basis of emotion draw on Antonio Damasio. The zone of proximal development is Lev Vygotsky's. Interoceptive accuracy and emotional granularity draw on Lisa Feldman Barrett and the heartbeat-detection literature. On autonomic regulation, this book uses the standard sympathetic/parasympathetic model and notes that several specific claims of Stephen Porges's polyvagal framework are contested. Trait sensitivity ("sensory-processing sensitivity") is Elaine Aron's; "empath" is used as a lay term, not an established category.

Agency, effort, and leadership

Effort-based decision-making and the discounting of costly rewards draw on John Salamone, Mark Walton, and colleagues. Claims about testosterone are deliberately conservative; popular accounts overstate its role. On leadership and development: psychological safety is Amy Edmondson's; autonomy-supportive motivation is self-determination theory (Edward Deci, Richard Ryan); the costs of overprotection connect to research on learned helplessness and self-efficacy (Martin Seligman, Albert Bandura). Adult-development timing draws on Daniel Levinson, Jeffrey Arnett, and Erik Erikson. Implementation intentions are Peter Gollwitzer's; habit-and-context research is Wendy Wood's; precommitment ("Ulysses contracts") comes from behavioral economics. The catharsis-of-anger myth is corrected by Brad Bushman's experiments; behavioral activation (act first, motivation follows) is a well-supported treatment for depression. The team-performance finding on psychological safety is associated with Google's "Project Aristotle." Incubation and the interplay of default-mode and executive networks in creativity draw on Roger Beaty and colleagues; the absorption trait is Auke Tellegen's.

Flow, dissolution, depth, and meaning

Flow and "transient hypofrontality" come from Arne Dietrich (building on Mihály Csíkszentmihályi's flow research). The default mode network is Marcus Raichle's discovery; its quieting in meditation is tracked by Judson Brewer, and its disintegration under psychedelics by Robin Carhart-Harris. The endocannabinoid basis of the "runner's high" is Johannes Fuss's work. Active imagination is Carl Jung's. On exiled material: post-traumatic growth (Richard Tedeschi, Lawrence Calhoun) is real but not universal, and sits alongside a large literature on lasting trauma injury. Somatic experiencing is Peter Levine's. The oscillation ("dual-process") model of grief is Margaret Stroebe and Henk Schut's; continuing-bonds theory revises the older "let go and move on" picture; memory reconsolidation — that a reactivated memory briefly becomes editable — is drawn from the learning-and-memory literature. On the forward-facing self: prospection (the mind as anticipatory rather than merely reactive) draws on Martin Seligman, Roy Baumeister, and colleagues; the association between a sense of purpose and lower mortality comes from longitudinal work by Patrick Hill and Nicholas Turiano, among others, and is reported here with due caution about causation. Strange attractors are Edward Lorenz's; the "acorn" is James Hillman's, framed by him as imagination. Paradigm shift is Thomas Kuhn's.

The formal model and the cross-scale conjecture (Part V)

The dynamical-systems formalism of Appendix D applies standard machinery to the book's architecture; the apparatus is not original, the application is. The coupled rate-equation form is the common currency of computational neuroscience (the Wilson–Cowan neural-population model), mathematical ecology (generalized Lotka–Volterra), and beyond. The treatment of psychopathology as a dynamical network with sudden transitions between attractors draws on the network theory of Denny Borsboom and Angélique Cramer; catastrophe theory is E. C. Zeeman's, building on René Thom. Critical slowing down as an early-warning signal of tipping points comes from Marten Scheffer and colleagues, with the application to depression onset demonstrated by Ingrid van de Leemput and coauthors. Control-theoretic self-regulation is Charles Carver and Michael Scheier's; the free-energy / active-inference grounding is Karl Friston's (borrowed as scaffolding and flagged as a contested frame). For the cross-scale conjecture of Appendix E: general systems theory is von Bertalanffy's, cybernetics and the Law of Requisite Variety are Wiener's and W. Ross Ashby's, resilience and "panarchy" are C. S. Holling's, and the design principles of durable common-pool institutions are Elinor Ostrom's. The idea of universality classes — different systems sharing dynamics near critical transitions regardless of microscopic detail — comes from statistical physics and the renormalization-group tradition. None of these authors is responsible for the conjecture; the Maha Invariance is a new and testable proposal that stands on their results without claiming their endorsement.

The astronomy

Planetary facts are used as illustration and have been checked against current understanding, with several popular overstatements corrected in the text: Jupiter is not massive enough to be even a brown dwarf, let alone a "failed star"; Jupiter's role in shielding Earth is genuinely mixed rather than purely protective; the Moon is a stabilizing influence on Earth's axial tilt but not the sole guarantor of a habitable climate; Earth's magnetosphere is real but not a perfect shield; "diamond rain" inside the outer giants is a plausible, laboratory-motivated model rather than a settled observation. Even the "ice giant" label for Uranus and Neptune is now contested — a 2026 study (Young and colleagues, arXiv:2606.18219, submitted but not yet peer-reviewed) argues the two are better understood as "magma-ocean worlds" — and the Neptune chapter uses this as a live illustration of the book's method: because the planets illustrate rather than testify, revisions to planetary science sharpen the imagery without disturbing any psychological claim. The status of Planet Nine is likewise treated as openly unresolved and, as of this writing, the subject of active observational tests. Where an astronomical claim carries any weight in the argument, that is an error; the planets illustrate, they do not testify.
