A Note on Method: The Three Registers
This book makes an unusual promise and tries to keep it on every page: that the reader will always know which kind of claim they are reading. The temptation in a book of this scope — one that runs from the origin of the first replicator to the future of artificial intelligence — is to let the certainty of the established science bleed into the speculation, so that a grand interpretation borrows credibility it has not earned. That is the move this book refuses. Established science is reported with its sources; inference is marked as inference; speculation and conviction are fenced and owned. The register note that closes each chapter is not decoration. It is the accounting.
Two places received extra fencing because they are where books like this one most often go wrong. The first is any claim touching the "improvement" or "decline" of human beings — the relaxation of selection, mismatch, sovereign design — which was walled, every time, against the eugenic misreading, on the principle that these are claims about environments and capabilities, never about the worth or ranking of persons. The second is the intersection of quantum physics and biology, which was kept rigorously separate from the quantum-mysticism that surrounds it, and in particular from the unproven hypothesis of quantum consciousness, which the argument neither requires nor asserts. Where the science itself is genuinely unsettled — abiogenesis, transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, the functional role of quantum coherence in biology, practical quantum advantage — the uncertainty was reported as uncertainty rather than smoothed away.
