BIM and IFC: exchange with a declared purpose

A shared building model is useful only when the receiving workflow gets the information it requires.

How to use this idea

IFC describes building and infrastructure information exchange across disciplines and lifecycle stages. Maha proposes testing an exchange against a small declared requirement set: identities, units, quantities and relationships needed for the next analysis. A file opening successfully is only the first check.

Worked illustration

Before passing a hypothetical envelope model to an analyst, compare a sample wall identifier, its area and its units on both sides of the exchange. Report a missing property rather than replacing it with zero.

All numerical examples here are synthetic, not measured building results.

Checks before relying on a result

  • Identify schema version and exchange purpose.
  • Check required properties after export and import.
  • Record unsupported or lost information.

What this does not establish

No IFC parser, exchange certification or round-trip validator is implemented here.
