From diagnosis to action: the Maha framework

One question, four connected practices

The Maha Principle asks what helps a person flourish when health, attention, relationships and institutions interact. Its four terms—Mindfulness, Authenticity, Health and Action—are a way of organising that inquiry. They are not a score that can certify a good life.

Mindfulness: notice the conditions

Begin with observation. Where is attention going? Which demands are chosen, and which have simply become habitual? In the book’s framework, noticing creates an opportunity to examine a response before repeating it.

Authenticity: examine what you are serving

A commitment can feel personal while being organised around someone else’s incentives. Authenticity asks whether a choice reflects values you can defend, and whether those values are visible in how you spend time, participate in relationships and treat other people.

Health: attend to the foundation

The book places bodily life inside its account of agency. Its health discussions belong to a wider educational argument about the conditions of flourishing. They are not individual treatment plans; personal health decisions require attention to circumstances and appropriate professional care.

Action: make the argument answerable

A principle becomes useful when it changes a decision that can be observed. Choose an action, identify what would count as progress, and review what happened. Correction is part of the practice: an unsuccessful experiment can reveal a mistaken assumption.

Diagnosis → doctrine → application

Diagnosis asks what is happening and what evidence supports that description. Doctrine makes the guiding commitments explicit. Application asks what those commitments require in a concrete setting. Moving through these stages helps distinguish a compelling explanation from a workable response.

From a life to a community

The framework also considers families, communities and institutions. Similar questions can travel between these settings, but a comparison is not proof that the same mechanism operates at every scale. Each proposal still needs evidence appropriate to the people and setting affected.

A place to begin

Pick one recurring difficulty. Describe it without turning it into a judgment of your worth. Ask which of the four practices would clarify it, choose one modest action, and decide when to review the result. The complete book develops this approach through its wider argument, audits and seven-day challenge.
