Insider and outsider categories

How can participant vocabulary and analytical vocabulary be used together without either disappearing?

Participant self-description

Insider category

Valid claim: Participants use this term with these documented meanings.

Analytical construct

Outsider category

Valid claim: The analyst defines and applies this category consistently.

Shared comparison axes

  • Speaker position
  • Purpose
  • Translation

Non-equivalences to preserve

  • Self-description is not automatically population consensus.
  • Analytical convenience is not indigenous ontology.

Comparison procedure

  1. 1.Store both vocabularies.
  2. 2.Declare who applies each term.
  3. 3.Test analytical categories against counterexamples and participant response.

Prohibited inference

Do not overwrite participant categories or exempt either vocabulary from evidence and ethical scrutiny.
