Choose a robotics benchmark for the decision it informs
Choose evaluation conditions that test the capability you need, not the leaderboard on which a system looks strongest. A benchmark is a measurement context, not a universal ranking of robots.
Evidence and interpretation
NIST’s component-oriented assembly work is a foundation for separating task capabilities. Maha proposes starting with a decision: purchasing a gripper, comparing a planner, or deciding whether more supervised testing is justified. These require different evidence. Record which task properties the benchmark varies and which it fixes. A fixture with perfect object coordinates can help compare planning implementations while saying nothing about perception. Keep that useful but narrow result instead of either discarding it or treating it as comprehensive readiness.
Proposed evidence workflow
- Write the decision, target population of tasks and excluded claims before selecting a suite.
- Compare task geometry, observations, assistance, reset policy and endpoint with the intended use.
- Publish per-condition results and explain each gap between the benchmark and the application.
Worked illustration
For shelf retrieval, a tabletop placement suite tests only part of the task. Our proposed selection memo accepts it for release-position bookkeeping but requests separate evidence for identifying a shelf, reaching it and recovering from a missed grasp. The missing tests stay visible even if every tabletop attempt succeeds.
Limits
No benchmark or robot is endorsed here. The six-case local simulation is a regression fixture, not a representative benchmark population.
