Trace robot datasets from collection to evaluation
Preserve the relationship between source recordings, transformations and the dataset used in an experiment. A dataset name alone cannot tell a reviewer which observations actually contributed.
Evidence and interpretation
W3C PROV supplies a vocabulary for describing derivation. Maha’s proposed robotics application assigns a revision to the collected material, processing activity and resulting episode set. A crop, resampling step or relabelling operation produces a new derivative. Keep the parent reference and the processing configuration so another team can distinguish a changed observation from a changed representation. Lineage should also record uncertainty: an imported archive with an unknown collection process cannot acquire complete provenance merely by receiving a local identifier.
Proposed evidence workflow
- Identify original collection, derived episodes and the transformation between them.
- Bind processing configuration, software revision and split membership to the derivative.
- Record unavailable parents explicitly and prevent downstream summaries from asserting complete lineage.
Worked illustration
A synthetic camera recording becomes a cropped sequence and then a labelled evaluation episode. The proposed chain retains both transformations. If the crop excludes a human intervention, the derivative cannot be used to claim autonomous completion without consulting the original evidence.
Limits
No W3C conformance claim or authentication of third-party recordings is made. A documented chain can still contain inaccurate statements.

PROV describes entities, activities and agents involved in producing information, with representations for derivation and versioning.
Boundary: This overview is a non-normative Working Group Note. A provenance description does not authenticate an observation.
