Determine which robotics requirements need specialist review

Start standards review with the intended use, system boundary and jurisdiction. Do not infer that a requirement applies—or is satisfied—because a robot resembles a familiar product category.

Evidence and interpretation

The NIST AI RMF is voluntary; its overview does not determine legal applicability. Maha proposes an applicability register that separates candidate references from confirmed obligations. Each entry needs an edition, scope rationale, competent reviewer and unresolved questions. A title or catalogue description can identify a document to obtain, but cannot substitute for reading the relevant clauses. Keep claims about package-quality practice distinct from whole-system safety and from mandatory requirements.

Proposed evidence workflow

  1. Describe intended use, users, environment, interfaces and jurisdiction without assigning a compliance label.
  2. Record candidate references and the precise question requiring qualified interpretation.
  3. Withhold clause-level or conformity claims until the relevant text and system evidence have been reviewed.

Worked illustration

A humanoid used for warehouse transport is proposed for home assistance. The register does not assume that an earlier industrial assessment transfers to the new setting. It records the changed use and requests a fresh applicability review.
